Major chaos in Maharashtra – Ajit Pawar resigns from Government, other NCP members also offer their resignations ..

In a sudden development that is not yet fully explained, the powerful Ajit Pawar, the nephew of Sharad Pawar has resigned from his post of Deputy Chief Minister, and following him, the other NCP ministers have also handed in their resignations (but not to the chief minister, instead to the state chief of the NCP). There are as yet a number of unanswered reasons for why this is happening, but there are many items that are happening at around the same time.
For the last few weeks, there has been a lot of discussion around huge corruption involving the irrigation department, especially in light of it spending huge sums of money for almost no increase in the area irrigated, all this happening when Ajit Pawar was the irrigation minister. There have been media exposures and reports on this as well, but such media reports no longer make any difference to the thick-skinned politicians who only react when the media presents proof that would expose them, and even then, investigating agencies can be found to try and hide many of these issues. In the current case, it was the Chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan who had called for a report on irrigation, something that Sharad Pawar had taken up with the Congress. These such reports were what the NCP had called as worrisome issues, and over which Sharad Pawar had raised issues some time back. However, the Congress has not pulled back the actions by the Chief Minister, which means that the Congress is fine with this amount of nuisance to the NCP.

Next, the reaction of the other NCP ministers is interesting. It would appear that Sharad Pawar had stated that there would be no more NCP ministers resigning, yet they all resigned and offered their resignations to the NCP party chief, a gambit. For some time now, there have been a lot of reports about tension and confrontation between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar, including about the political future and grandeur of Supriya Sule, who seems to be increasing her political stature, and possibly staking a claim to the future of the NCP (and it associated control of a large number of sugar, cooperative banks, and other industries in Maharashtra). Ajit Pawar would have none of this, since he is like a young turk, waiting for the handover of power from the senior politician, Sharad Pawar.
One has to wait and see what happens next. Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar are unlikely to turn their backs on the Congress, or on the power system in Maharashtra, since without this regular dose of power, they would be like a fish out of water.
