Not in the way that you would think, where people would leave the Shiv Sena of Bal and Uddhav Thackeray and join Raj’s Nav Nirman Movement, but another byproduct of the lack of protest by the Shiv Sena against the anti-North Indian movement of Raj. In fact, Uddhav almost seemed to be trying to coopt the movement, with statements that, while not explicitly threatening North Indians, saying the message with less violence. However, the talk of jobs for native Marathis first and the lack of any denunciation of Raj’s message sent a signal to the North Indians - the Shiv Sena essentially will not hesitate to adopt Raj’s message if it seems to be generating popular acclaim.
From time to time, you would get a reminder that the Shiv Sena existed outside Maharashtra, particularly when there would be a demonstration by the Delhi branch against some statement by other parties, or when a Valentine’s day celebration needed to be broken up violently. But now it seems that the leaders of these North Indian branches are finding the environment a bit hard to handle.
India, a country famous for its independence fight against the colonial powers of British forces for the long duration of 150 years and at last got its independence in 1947, first outrightly rejected the issue of recognition of State of Israel, which came into existence just after a year after India’s independence i.e. 1948. Indian premier of that time, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and its first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad with the father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi unitedly rejected the move of Zionist Regime to create a new country of Israel on the lands of already existing country of Palestine.
The stand of India against the formation of Zionist state was firm till the year 1990 and the government of Congress in the Republic of India was the front runner in holding this banner of non-recognition. But the same government after the death of its leader Rajiv Gandhi when handled by then premier Mr. P. V. NarsimhaRao starts working for the platform the recognition of Zionist State and the embassy of Israel came into existence on the Indian soil in the year 1991. With this move, the congress government started working closely with Israel in many fields of defense, spying, launching satellite and many suspicious things like training individuals and police officials in-terms of riotings and implementing communal genocide as was the case with Gujrat riots.
In a stinging criticism of the Indian Government, the Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has left the country, and accused them of being hand-in-glove with the Muslim fundamentalists who have harassed her. In a talk with reporters on her way out of India, she bemoaned the fact that the Indian Government did not support her, harassed her and kept her under surveillance:
“If I disclose my destination my security will be compromised. My face has now become recognisable and I could be target of religious fundamentalist”, Taslima said, adding that she will not hesitate to discuss what she said the traumatic experience she allegedly went through during various international seminars lined up in Europe in the next few months.
Suddenly, there are a number of questions about the conduct of the mother in the case of the British teenager Scarlett Keeling in Goa, a horrible case where the daughter was murdered on a beach in Goa. There is some backlash emerging against the mother in terms of questioning as to why the girl was left alone, that the girl was doing drugs, that she should have been in school, etc. These are all valid questions, and are relevant to a case where child services would investigate as to whether the children are being brought up in a home where they are getting the proper care, education, etc.
However, the worrying facts of this case is the conduct of the local Goa police.
After Scarlett was found dead on the Anjuna beach, her family had contended that she was raped and murdered. Initially reluctant to treat it as a murder case, Goa Police carried out a detailed probe after a second autopsy was conducted by a team of doctors here following a demand by the girl’s mother Fiona MacKeown. “We are happy that police have conducted investigations properly but we want that police’s act of misguiding Fiona Mackowen (Scarlett’s mother) should also be probed,” Vikram Varma, lawyer for Scarlett’s family, said.
Subhiksha is a big retailer in India with branches spread all over. It is supposed to be a big boon for consumers, with most items being sold at a rate lower than that available in neighborhood shops, something that will help the limited budgets of most lower and middle class families. Now let us consider the field of buying drugs from the neighborhood medical shop. Till now, all these drugs have been sold at the MRP mentioned on the drug (a little known fact is that the MRP is the maximum price at which the item can be sold - it can be sold for lower than the MRP); and then Subhiksha had the medical section where you could buy a drug or potion for lower than possible at the normal pharmacist. Given that the elderly are the ones most affected by drug prices, Subiksha would be the savior for many of our senior citizens. And then Subiksha has been complaining recently that their supplies of medicine has been getting choked because small retailers and even wholesalers are worried about the lower price of Subiksha:
Motherhood is a very important stage in the life of a lady, and anything that could harm the prospect of motherhood needs to be considered very carefully. Additionally, in a sign that the Supreme Court was aware of the prospect of private hospitals and nursing homes trying to earn more money by conducting additional medical operations on patients (while the patient was on the operation theatre and only relatives had given permission), the Court had asked the medical institutions to take consent from the patient before conducting additional medical procedures (except in cases of urgency or life/death situations). Tying these 2 together, a patient whose ovaries were removed during a medical procedure by a doctor at a private hospital based on consent by relatives, has sought enhanced damages (she was awarded Rs. 25,000 earlier - clearly seems to be inadequate compensation):
In the landmark verdict on January 16, the SC had chastised private hospitals and nursing homes for inflating bills by conducting additional procedures on patients by taking consent from the relatives while he was on the operation table.
The case of Rizwanur Rehman, a middle class computer graphics teacher who married Priyanka Todi (daughter of a rich industrialist) and whose body was found soon after lying on the railway tracks was a major setback for the West Bengal Government. Initially the police and Government stonewalled, and it was only when there was a massive public outcry and a sustained campaign by the media that things started to happen. It were the reports about a relentless pressure on the young man by the family of his wife, coupled with pressure from senior police officers (who should have sided with the young couple who had broken no law, and instead, no doubt swayed by the money power and pull of the rich industrialist put pressure on Rizwanur) that caused the Government to eventually try to extricate itself from this mess by removing the Police Commissioner and handing the case over to the CBI (prodded by the Calcutta High Court).
And the CBI report is pretty clear - after some detailed investigation of all the people involved, and numerous interviews, the CBI has declared that it was a suicide, but caused due to heavy pressure.
KOLKATA: The much-awaited CBI report on the mysterious death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rehman on Thursday said that he had committed suicide. The report also recommended action against senior police officers, including the then Kolkata police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee in that connection.
